Vatican Necropolis (Vatican)

Weather…

The Vatican Necropolis is an ancient burial ground situated directly beneath St. Peter's Basilica, dating back to the Roman imperial period. Originally an open-air cemetery on the slopes of the Vatican Hill, it contains a variety of mausoleums belonging to wealthy Roman families, alongside humbler graves. In the 4th century, Emperor Constantine ordered the necropolis to be filled with earth to provide a level foundation for the construction of the Old St. Peter's Basilica, which preserved the site for centuries. Archaeological excavations were secretly carried out between 1940 and 1949 under the direction of Pope Pius XII, who sought to find the remains of St. Peter. The dig revealed two rows of mausoleums and a complex network of funerary structures featuring remarkably preserved frescoes, stuccos, and inscriptions. The central find was the 'Graffiti Wall' or 'Wall G', where evidence pointed to the presence of St. Peter’s remains. Access to this fragile subterranean world is strictly limited to small guided groups to ensure the preservation of the ancient microclimate.
