The Cortile del Belvedere is a landmark of Renaissance architecture, designed by Donato Bramante starting in 1505 under the commission of Pope Julius II. The ambitious project aimed to connect the Vatican Palace with the Villa Belvedere, located approximately 300 meters away, using a sophisticated system of tiered terraces and staircases. Drawing inspiration from ancient Roman sanctuary complexes like Palestrina, Bramante created a monumental outdoor space intended for courtly ceremonies, theatrical performances, and even knightly tournaments. Over the centuries, the original long perspective of the courtyard was segmented by the construction of cross-wings, notably the Vatican Library wing under Sixtus V and the Braccio Nuovo under Pius VII. Today, it serves as a central hub for the Vatican Museums, housing some of the most important classical sculptures in history. The courtyard's design established a new architectural language that influenced European palace and garden planning for generations.
