The geological composition of solid tufa allowed for the construction of massive retaining walls that secure the slope while housing underground passages and storage facilities. Today, the Via del Belvedere remains a core part of the Vatican's internal logistics, surrounded by monumental architecture and carefully landscaped grounds.
