Olympic Mountains (United States)

Weather…

The Olympic Mountains rise dramatically on the Olympic Peninsula in northwestern Washington state. This striking range is almost entirely enclosed within Olympic National Park and is characterized by its isolated position between the Pacific Ocean and Puget Sound. Geologically, the mountains were formed by the subduction of the Juan de Fuca plate beneath the North American plate, uplifting marine sediments from the ocean floor. The highest peak is Mount Olympus at 2,432 meters. Due to their location, the mountains intercept vast amounts of precipitation, leading to the creation of unique temperate rainforests like the Hoh Rainforest on the western slopes. The peaks are home to over 60 active glaciers, which persist at relatively low elevations due to heavy snowfall. The peninsula's isolation has led to the development of numerous endemic plant and animal species, such as the Olympic marmot. Today, the Olympic Mountains are a UNESCO World Heritage site and a premier destination for mountain climbers and hikers seeking diverse ecosystems.
