Spokane, located in eastern Washington, is a city situated on the Spokane River and known for its natural beauty, particularly the Spokane Falls in the heart of downtown. The area was originally inhabited by the Spokane tribal nation. The modern city was founded in the 1870s as Spokane Falls, propelled by the arrival of the Northern Pacific Railway, which established it as a major rail hub. A devastating fire in 1889 destroyed the downtown area, but the city was quickly rebuilt on a grand scale. Spokane boomed in the early 20th century, fueled by mining (particularly silver and lead) in the nearby Silver Valley region of Idaho. The city gained international recognition in 1974 when it hosted Expo '74, a world's fair with an environmental theme. The site of the fair became Riverfront Park, a large urban park that remains a major attraction. Today, Spokane has a diversified economy with strengths in healthcare, education, logistics, and advanced manufacturing. The city serves as a major commercial and cultural hub for the region known as the Inland Northwest.
