Shiloh National Military Park
Shiloh National Military Park, spanning the border of Tennessee and Mississippi, commemorates the Battle of Shiloh, one of the bloodiest engagements of the American Civil War. On April 6 and 7, 1862, Union forces led by Ulysses S. Grant collided with Confederate troops under General Albert Sidney Johnston. The two days of fierce fighting resulted in more than 23,000 casualties, a toll that stunned the nation with its unprecedented scale of destruction. Key battlefield locations such as the 'Hornet's Nest' and the 'Sunken Road' remain as haunting reminders of the intense combat and bravery displayed by soldiers on both sides. The Union victory at Shiloh paved the way for the control of the Mississippi River valley and severely weakened the Confederate position in the West. Established in 1894, the park protects the battlefield, hundreds of historic monuments, and the Shiloh National Cemetery. It also features well-preserved prehistoric Indian mounds, adding a deep layer of ancient history to the site. Visitors can take guided or self-guided tours to explore the strategic points that decided the fate of the Western Theater.
