Cincinnati, located on the banks of the Ohio River in southwestern Ohio, is a city with a rich German heritage and a significant historical role. Founded in 1788, the city was named after the Society of the Cincinnati, an organization of Revolutionary War officers. In the 19th century, Cincinnati attracted a large number of German immigrants who durably shaped the city's culture and architecture, especially in the 'Over-the-Rhine' neighborhood. This district possesses one of the largest collections of Italianate architecture in the United States. The city was a major commercial and industrial hub, earning the nickname 'Porkopolis' due to its pork processing industry. Today, Cincinnati's economy is diversified, including the headquarters of several Fortune 500 companies like Procter & Gamble and The Kroger Company. The city is also a center for education and healthcare. Culturally, Cincinnati is known for its historic institutions, including the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, one of the oldest in the U.S., and the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, opened in 1875. The Roebling Suspension Bridge, completed in 1867, was a prototype for the Brooklyn Bridge.
