Albuquerque, the most populous city in New Mexico, is situated in the central part of the state along the Rio Grande. The city was founded in 1706 as a Spanish colonial outpost and retains much of its historical character in its Old Town, characterized by its Pueblo-Spanish Colonial architecture. The arrival of the railroad in 1880 led to the creation of a new city center, now known as Downtown. Albuquerque is located at a high altitude (over 5,300 feet or 1,600 meters) and has an arid climate. It is world-renowned for the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, the largest hot air balloon festival in the world, held every October. The city's economy is strongly tied to science, medicine, and technology. Sandia National Laboratories and Kirtland Air Force Base are major research and development centers and large employers. The University of New Mexico also contributes significantly to the local culture and economy. Route 66, which runs through the city, adds to its historical allure, and the nearby Sandia Mountains offer year-round recreational opportunities, accessible via the Sandia Peak Tramway, one of the world's longest aerial tramways.
