Fort Wayne, located in northeastern Indiana, is a city situated at the confluence of the St. Joseph, St. Marys, and Maumee rivers. This strategic location was historically significant for the Miami people, who had their capital, Kekionga, here. In the late 18th century, the United States Army under General 'Mad' Anthony Wayne established a series of forts to secure control of the territory, culminating in the founding of Fort Wayne in 1794. The city grew significantly in the 19th century with the construction of the Wabash and Erie Canal and later the railroads, becoming an important transportation and manufacturing hub. Fort Wayne's economy was historically anchored in manufacturing, particularly in the automotive and electrical industries. More recently, the economy has diversified to include defense and security, healthcare, insurance, and logistics. The city is also a regional center for arts and culture, home to the Fort Wayne Museum of Art and the acclaimed Fort Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra. Recent downtown investments, including riverfront development, aim to enhance quality of life and foster growth.
