Aurora, Colorado, began as a frontier town named Fletcher in the late 19th century and now spans three counties: Arapahoe, Adams, and Douglas. The city experienced significant growth following the opening of Fitzsimons Army Hospital in 1918, which expanded during World War II and laid the groundwork for the city's modern economy. Post-war, Aurora's development as a suburb of Denver accelerated. A defining moment in its modern history was the redevelopment of the decommissioned Fitzsimons site into the Anschutz Medical Campus, a state-of-the-art healthcare, research, and education complex that includes the University of Colorado School of Medicine and UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital. This has transformed the city's economy from one dominated by the military to one driven by healthcare, biotechnology, and aerospace. Buckley Air Force Base remains a major military and economic driver in the area.
