Casapueblo
Casapueblo is a remarkable, habitable sculpture located in Punta Ballena, near Punta del Este. It was the creation and residence of the renowned Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró. Construction began in 1958 around a simple wooden box and evolved organically over 36 years without formal plans, with the artist drawing inspiration from the nests of the ovenbird (hornero). The result is a sprawling, whitewashed cement complex that clings to the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, reminiscent of the architecture of Santorini in Greece. Páez Vilaró considered the building a living work, constantly changing and expanding. Today, Casapueblo houses a museum, an art gallery, a hotel, and a restaurant. The museum showcases a large collection of Páez Vilaró's work, including paintings, sculptures, and ceramics. Its Sunset Ceremony is a famous daily event, where a recording of the artist reciting a poem to the sun is played as the sun descends into the sea, making it a deeply emotional and iconic experience in Uruguay.
