San Carlos Bullring (Uruguay)

Weather…

The Plaza de Toros Real de San Carlos in Colonia del Sacramento is a monumental testament to a brief but fascinating era in Uruguayan history. Inaugurated on January 9, 1910, it was designed by Croatian architect Josip Marković in a Moorish Revival style reminiscent of Spanish arenas. The bullring was built to hold 10,000 spectators and was part of a larger tourist complex developed by Argentine businessman Nicolás Mihanovich. However, its existence was short-lived; just two years after it opened, in 1912, the Uruguayan government banned bullfighting nationwide. After hosting only eight official bullfights, the arena was closed and fell into ruin for nearly a century, its impressive decay becoming a tourist attraction in its own right. Following extensive restoration work, the Plaza de Toros was reopened in December 2021 as a modern cultural center for concerts, sporting events, and exhibitions, preserving the historic facade while combining it with a state-of-the-art roof structure.
