Nueva Helvecia, also known as Colonia Suiza, is a city in the Colonia Department renowned for its strong Central European heritage. It was founded in 1862 by immigrants primarily from Switzerland, but also from Germany, Austria, and France. These settlers brought their agricultural traditions, especially dairy farming and cheese-making, transforming the region into the 'dairy basin' of Uruguay. To this day, Nueva Helvecia remains the center of Uruguay's dairy industry, and its cheeses and dairy products are famous nationwide. The city's architecture reflects its heritage, with many buildings constructed in the Swiss chalet style. Cultural traditions are proudly maintained, such as the annual Beer Festival (Fiesta de la Cerveza) and other festivities that celebrate the music, dances, and cuisine of the founding countries. The town is very well-kept, with flower-adorned squares and streets. Bilingual street signs in Spanish and German or French are not uncommon. Tourism plays a significant role, with visitors coming to experience the unique culture, taste the local delicacies, and see historic buildings like the Hotel Suizo.
