Izmail is the largest Ukrainian port city on the Danube River, located in the southern Odesa Oblast near the Romanian border. The city's history is deeply intertwined with the Russo-Turkish Wars, notably the 1790 siege of the supposedly impregnable Ottoman fortress of Izmail by Russian troops led by Suvorov. Today, the Suvorov Museum and a monumental mosque, which now serves as a museum dedicated to the storming of the fortress, commemorate this era. As a major inland port, Izmail is a vital logistical hub for grain exports and trade between Ukraine and other Danube nations. The city is characterized by broad avenues and Neoclassical architecture developed during its time under the Russian Empire and later Romania.
