Lake Kyoga (Uganda)

Weather…

Lake Kyoga is a large, shallow lake complex in central Uganda, covering an area of about 1,720 square kilometers at an elevation of 1,033 meters. It is part of the African Great Lakes system, and its main inflow is the Victoria Nile, which flows through it from west to east on its way to Lake Albert. The lake's maximum depth is only about 5.7 meters, and most of it is less than 4 meters deep. This shallowness results in large areas of the lake being covered by water hyacinths and papyrus swamp, which can make navigation challenging. The lake has finger-like extensions that are often considered separate lakes. Lake Kyoga's ecosystem is rich in biodiversity, although it was significantly altered by the introduction of the Nile perch in the 1950s, which led to the decline of many native fish species. Today, the lake supports a significant fishing industry, primarily targeting Nile perch, tilapia, and the African lungfish.
