Nile (Uganda)

Weather…

The Nile River, the longest river in the world, plays a central geographic and economic role in Uganda. It exits Lake Victoria at Jinja as the Victoria Nile, beginning a dramatic journey across the country. Jinja is the site of the 'Source of the Nile', a symbolic location famous since the explorations of John Hanning Speke in the 19th century. On its way north, the Victoria Nile passes through Lake Kyoga before plunging through a narrow gorge at Murchison Falls, one of Africa's most spectacular waterfalls. Here, the mighty river squeezes through a rock cleft just 7 meters wide and tumbles 43 meters. After the falls, now known as the Albert Nile, it flows into Lake Albert and continues its path north into South Sudan. The Nile is vital to Uganda for hydroelectric power generation, with several major dams like the Owen Falls Dam (Nalubaale) and the Karuma Dam. It is also a lifeline for fishing, transport, and tourism, especially within Murchison Falls National Park, where boat trips to see hippos, crocodiles, and a rich birdlife are popular.
