Utica Archaeological Site

The archaeological site of Utica is of paramount historical significance as it is recognized as the first Phoenician settlement on Tunisian soil, traditionally founded in 1101 BC. Originally a major port city at the mouth of the Medjerda River, the site is now located roughly 10 kilometers inland due to centuries of silting that altered the coastline. Following the destruction of Carthage in 146 BC, Utica was designated as the capital of the Roman province of Africa Vetus, leading to a golden age of economic and architectural growth. Current excavations have revealed magnificent Roman villas, such as the 'House of the Cascades,' renowned for its intricate floor mosaics and sophisticated private fountains. Visitors can also explore the remains of the forum, public baths, and ancient Punic necropolises that provide a window into the lives of the early maritime settlers. The city played a pivotal role during the Roman Civil Wars, serving as the final refuge for Cato the Younger. Despite its immense historical weight, Utica remains a tranquil site, offering a more intimate look at antiquity than the busier ruins of Carthage. The on-site museum houses a rich collection of artifacts, including Punic pottery and Roman sculptures, reflecting the city's long and diverse cultural heritage.
