Wat Chaiwatthanaram
Wat Chaiwatthanaram is one of the most striking temple complexes in the Ayutthaya Historical Park, located on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River. It was constructed in 1630 by King Prasat Thong in the classic Khmer style to commemorate his victory over Cambodia and to honor his mother. The architecture is highly symbolic, representing the Buddhist worldview: the central 35-meter-high prang symbolizes Mount Meru, the center of the universe, while smaller towers represent the surrounding continents and oceans. Following the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767, the temple was heavily damaged by Burmese invaders and left to decay for over two centuries. In the late 1980s, the Thai Department of Fine Arts initiated a major restoration project that returned the monument to its current grandeur. Today, the complex is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site and is particularly famous for its pretty sunsets, when the red brickwork glows in warm hues.
