Mpanda serves as the administrative capital of the Katavi Region in the remote western part of Tanzania. Over the last few decades, the town has transformed from a small settlement into a vital regional commercial hub, particularly following the creation of the Katavi Region in 2012. Mpanda is the terminus of a branch line of the Tanzanian Central Line railway, linking the town to Kaliua and the broader national rail network. This railway connection is essential for the transport of agricultural commodities such as maize, rice, and tobacco, which are grown extensively in the fertile surrounding areas. The town acts as the primary gateway to Katavi National Park, one of the country's most rugged and least-visited wildlife areas, providing Mpanda with significant tourism potential. Geographically, the town is situated on a level plain surrounded by Miombo woodlands. Economic growth is further bolstered by regional mining activities, particularly gold extraction. Despite its isolation, Mpanda features a modern airport with a paved runway, improving accessibility for government officials and visitors. The town is a cultural melting pot, attracting various ethnic groups drawn by its agricultural opportunities.
