Matengo Highlands

The Matengo Highlands are a scenic mountain range located in the Mbinga District of the Ruvuma Region in southern Tanzania, near the shores of Lake Malawi. The highlands are renowned for the "Ngoro" pit cultivation system, a traditional and sustainable agricultural technique developed by the Matengo people to prevent soil erosion on steep slopes. This innovative system involves digging a series of pits that trap water and organic matter, allowing for intensive cultivation of coffee and food crops while maintaining soil fertility for generations.
