Pugu Forest Reserve (Tanzania)

Weather…

The Pugu Forest Reserve is located 25 kilometers southwest of Dar es Salaam and covers approximately 22 square kilometers of the Pugu Hills. It is recognized as one of the oldest coastal forests in the world and serves as a critical biodiversity hotspot with numerous endemic plant species. The area contains significant kaolin deposits that were historically mined for industrial purposes, now forming striking white geological formations. Visitors can hike to various viewpoints overlooking the Indian Ocean or explore large caves that house thousands of bats. Ecologically, the reserve is an internationally important sanctuary for rare species such as the Pugu forest owlet. Despite its proximity to the expanding metropolis, the forest remains an essential watershed for the surrounding local populations.
