Arwad Citadel (Syria)

Weather…

The Arwad Citadel is located on Syria's only inhabited island, situated approximately three kilometers off the coast of Tartus. The fortress has Phoenician roots, dating back to a time when Arwad was a dominant maritime city-state, and its foundations still incorporate massive ancient stone blocks. During the Crusades, the island became the final stronghold of the Knights Templar in the Levant, holding out until it eventually fell to the Mamluks in 1302. The current architectural complex reflects various historical layers, including Ayyubid and Ottoman expansions, as well as modifications made during the French Mandate when it served as a prison for Syrian nationalists. Today, the citadel houses a museum showcasing maritime archaeology and artifacts that illustrate the island's long and turbulent history. Its strategic location allowed for the surveillance of the eastern Mediterranean shipping lanes for millennia. The fortress stands as a symbol of resilience, having survived countless sieges and naval blockades throughout the centuries.
