Tekkiye Mosque (Syria)

Weather…

The Tekkiye Mosque in Damascus, also known as the Sultan Suleiman Mosque, is a masterpiece of 16th-century Ottoman architecture located on the banks of the Barada River. Commissioned by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and designed by the legendary architect Mimar Sinan, it was built between 1554 and 1559. The complex was originally established as a 'tekke', a hospice for dervishes and a station for pilgrims on their journey to Mecca. Its architectural profile is defined by two slender, pencil-shaped minarets and a lead-covered central dome, characteristic of the classical Ottoman imperial style. The facade features the local 'ablaq' masonry of alternating black and white stone, blending Istanbul’s design with Damascene traditions. Today, the complex houses a bustling handicraft market where artisans continue to practice ancient crafts like glassblowing and marquetry. Set within lush gardens, the mosque remains one of the most serene and architecturally harmonious landmarks in Damascus.
