Azem Palace (Syria)

Weather…

The Azem Palace is an exquisite example of 18th-century Ottoman residential architecture, located in the Old City of Damascus near the Umayyad Mosque. It was constructed in 1749 as the private residence of As'ad Pasha al-Azm, the Ottoman governor of Damascus. The palace is designed according to the traditional layout of elite Islamic houses, divided into the private Haremlik and the public Selamlik. Its most striking feature is the 'ablaq' masonry style, which employs alternating courses of black basalt and white limestone to create a visually dynamic facade. Inside, the rooms boast intricate wooden paneling, painted ceilings, and floors inlaid with colorful marble. The expansive courtyards feature cooling fountains and lush greenery, providing a serene escape from the surrounding city. Since 1954, the palace has housed the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and domestic life of Ottoman-era Syria.
