Dinder National Park, located along the border with Ethiopia in southeastern Sudan, is the country's oldest and most significant nature reserve. Established in 1935 and designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1979, it covers an expansive area of approximately 10,000 square kilometers. The park encompasses three distinct ecosystems: riverine floodplains, open savannas, and dense woodlands, all sustained by the Dinder and Rahad rivers. It serves as a critical sanctuary for a wide array of wildlife, including lions, leopards, African buffalo, and numerous gazelle species. Its significance is particularly notable as a vital stopover for migratory birds traveling between Europe and southern Africa. The seasonal wetlands, known locally as 'Mayas,' provide essential water sources during the dry season. Despite threats from poaching and agricultural encroachment, Dinder remains a symbol of Sudanese conservation efforts and a site of extraordinary biological diversity.

The best time to visit Dinder is during the dry season from November to April, when animals gather around waterholes. In the rainy season (May-October) many roads are impassable and vegetation is dense, hindering sightings. Plan your visit in the cooler months.
