The Bahirawakanda Buddha Statue is one of the most prominent landmarks in Kandy, situated on the Bahirawa Kanda hill overlooking the city. Standing at a height of approximately 26.83 meters (88 feet), it is one of the tallest seated Buddha statues in Sri Lanka. Construction of the statue began in 1972 and was completed in 1993 under the guidance of the Sri Maha Bodhi Vihara monastery. Due to its elevated position on the hill, the pristine white figure is visible from almost every part of the Kandy city center. Visitors can climb a flight of stairs behind the statue to reach a viewing platform that provides a wide panoramic view of the city, Kandy Lake, and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. The religious site serves as a significant center for meditation and spiritual reflection for the local Buddhist community.
