Tonj is a prominent city located in the Warrap State of South Sudan, situated along the banks of the Tonj River. Historically, it has functioned as a significant administrative hub, serving as the capital of the defunct Tonj State between 2015 and 2020. The area is predominantly inhabited by the Dinka people, whose socio-economic life revolves around cattle herding and seasonal agriculture. Geographically, the region is characterized by flat plains that experience seasonal flooding, creating rich grazing lands for livestock. During the Sudanese civil wars, Tonj was a strategic location for military operations but has since evolved into a vital regional trading center. The city is equipped with a local unpaved airfield and lies on a key transport route connecting Juba to the northwestern parts of the country. Today, Tonj remains a central point for regional governance and the preservation of Dinka cultural heritage and traditions.
