Suncheon is an ecologically focused city in Jeollanam-do province, recognized as the environmental hub of South Korea. It is most famous for Suncheon Bay, one of the world's best-preserved coastal wetlands, which has been protected under the Ramsar Convention since 2006. The bay features vast reed fields and serves as a vital wintering ground for the endangered hooded crane. In 2013, the city hosted the Suncheonman International Garden Expo, which evolved into the present-day Suncheonman Bay National Garden. Historically, the nearby Naganeupseong Folk Village is significant as a well-preserved fortress town from the Joseon Dynasty, featuring traditional thatched-roof houses. Suncheon also acts as a major transportation junction in the southeastern part of the province. The city successfully integrates modern sustainable urban planning with the preservation of natural assets and historic sites like Songgwangsa Temple.
