Mokpo is a historic port city located at the southwestern tip of the Korean Peninsula in Jeollanam-do Province. The city gained prominence during the Japanese colonial era as a vital export port for agricultural products, a legacy still reflected in the preserved architecture of its old city center. A prominent landmark is Mount Yudalsan, which features panoramic views of the city and the offshore archipelago with its numerous islands. Mokpo serves as a primary gateway for ferry services to islands such as Jeju and Heuksandan. The city is also renowned for its unique culinary culture, particularly seafood specialties like fermented skate (hongeo). In recent years, Mokpo has been further enhanced as a tourist destination by the opening of the Mokpo Marine Cable Car, one of the longest cable car systems in Korea. Historically, Mokpo is closely associated with former President Kim Dae-jung, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate who grew up in the city and maintained strong political ties to the region.
