Gabiley is a prominent city located in the Maroodi Jeex region of northwestern Somaliland, approximately 54 kilometers west of the capital, Hargeisa. It is widely recognized as the 'breadbasket' of Somaliland due to its relatively high rainfall and fertile soil, which support the most intensive agricultural production in the country. The region produces the bulk of the nation's sorghum, maize, and various fruits and vegetables supplied to national markets. Historically, the town was established in the late 19th century as a sedentary settlement and quickly evolved into a vital trading center on the route to Ethiopia. During the civil war in the 1980s, Gabiley served as a sanctuary for displaced persons and a strategic base for the resistance against the Siad Barre regime. Today, the city is a beacon of stability and economic progress, characterized by expanding infrastructure and educational institutions like Timalade University. Its geographical proximity to the Ethiopian border makes Gabiley a crucial hub for cross-border trade and logistics.
