Quatre Bornes is a rural village in the south of Mahé whose name traces back to four old boundary stones that once marked the plantation borders of various large landowners. The village's position on a mountain saddle between Anse Takamaka and Anse Royale gives it a central role as a hub for hikers wishing to explore the pristine southern coast, including beaches like Anse Bazarca and Police Bay. Quatre Bornes has a small primary school, a Catholic chapel, and several family-run guesthouses. Most residents live from subsistence agriculture, small-scale fishing, and renting accommodation to tourists. Characteristic are the traditional Creole-style houses with timber balconies and brightly painted facades. In the surrounding area mangoes, breadfruit, bananas, and vanilla grow; some families still produce vanilla using traditional methods. From the highest point of the main road one enjoys a spectacular view over the southern tip of the island and the open sea toward the Indian Ocean horizon.
