Plaisance is a densely populated suburb just south of Victoria's city center that has, since the 1970s, grown into one of the largest residential areas on the island. The name (French for "pleasure") harks back to an old plantation that was once among the largest on the island. The townscape is today defined by a mix of older social housing estates from the early independence era and newer multi-storey apartment buildings. Just offshore lies the artificial Eden Island, a luxury project with marina, villas, and a shopping mall, whose bridge starts directly from Plaisance. Plaisance has a primary school, a secondary school, several Creole restaurants, and a modern police station. Its religious center is the church of Sacré-Cœur de Jésus de Plaisance, where traditional Creole hymns are sung every Sunday accompanied by guitar and drum. The neighborhood is also known for its bustling community life and weekend football matches.
