Užice is a major industrial and cultural hub in Western Serbia, tucked away in the deep valley of the Đetinja River within the Zlatibor District. The city is overlooked by the ruins of a 14th-century medieval fortress, once the stronghold of local ruler Nikola Altomanović. In modern history, Užice gained international recognition as the center of the 'Užice Republic' in 1941, which was the first liberated territory in Nazi-occupied Europe during World War II. A landmark of engineering is the hydroelectric power plant on the Đetinja River, built in 1900 based on Nikola Tesla's principles; it was the first of its kind in Serbia and among the first in the world. Today, the city is known for its robust metal and textile industries and serves as the main gateway to the Zlatibor mountain range. Culturally, Užice is famous for its distinctive local cuisine, particularly the 'komplet lepinja' pastry. Its landscape is characterized by a mix of socialist-era brutalist architecture and impressive natural features like the Đetinja Canyon.
