Manasija Monastery, also known as Resava, is one of the most significant monuments of medieval Serbian culture, representing the Morava architectural school at its peak. It was built by Despot Stefan Lazarević between 1407 and 1418 as his primary mausoleum and a fortified retreat. The complex is enclosed by a massive defensive wall featuring eleven towers, the largest of which is known as the Despot's Tower. During the 15th century, the monastery served as the home of the Resava School, a prominent center for the transcription and translation of Christian texts, vital for preserving Serbian literacy during the Ottoman expansion. The main church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, is renowned for its high-quality stone construction and its interior frescoes. These paintings are considered masterpieces of late Byzantine art, particularly the portraits of holy warriors and the donor portrait of Stefan Lazarević. Despite being captured by the Ottomans in 1459 and suffering heavy damage over centuries, the monastery remains an active religious site and a testament to the cultural zenith of late medieval Serbia.
