Caričin Grad (Serbia)

Weather…

Caričin Grad, also known as Justiniana Prima, is one of the most significant Byzantine archaeological sites in the Balkans, located in southern Serbia. The city was founded in the 6th century (around 535 AD) by Emperor Justinian I near his birthplace and served as the administrative and religious seat of the Archbishopric of Illyricum. The site is notable for its sophisticated urban planning, featuring an acropolis, an upper town, and a lower town with monumental churches, public squares, and intricate mosaics. Particularly impressive are the remains of the episcopal palace and several large basilicas, which testify to the former grandeur of this major early Christian center. Despite its prominence, the city existed for a relatively short period and was abandoned in the early 7th century under the pressure of Slavic and Avar migrations. Today, located on a plateau near the town of Lebane, the site features fascinating insights into late Roman and early Byzantine civilization and architecture. Caričin Grad is currently on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list and remains a site of ongoing archaeological research aimed at uncovering the complex structures of this ancient urban masterpiece.
