Vranje is situated in the far south of Serbia and serves as the administrative and cultural center of the Pčinja District. The city was first mentioned in historical records in 1093 and remained a key strategic location under Ottoman administration for centuries, which significantly shaped its unique architectural landscape and local customs. A prominent landmark is the White Bridge (Beli most), constructed in 1844, which commemorates a tragic love story from the Turkish period and has become the primary symbol of the city. Vranje is also internationally renowned as the birthplace of the great realist writer Borisav Stanković, whose literary works vividly capture the region's folklore, traditional music, and complex social structures. Historically, the city's economy was built on a strong textile and tobacco industry, whereas modern development now focuses on services and small-scale manufacturing. Geographically, it is positioned within the Vranje Basin at an average altitude of 480 meters, sheltered by the Pljačkovica and Krstilovica mountains, providing a pleasant climate near the North Macedonian border.
