First mentioned in the 11th century, the town saw significant growth in the 18th century under Empress Maria Theresa, following the settlement of Danube Swabians. In 1756, the Apatin Brewery was established, which remains the largest brewery in Serbia and the producer of the famous 'Jelen' beer. Positioned at river kilometer 1401, Apatin is a major hub for fishing and water sports, boasting a modern marina that is among the best-equipped on the entire Danube. The city is also famous for its annual 'Fishermen's Evenings' festival, celebrating local gastronomy and maritime culture. The urban architecture showcases Baroque influences and the legacy of the German settlers, giving Apatin a distinct Central European character.
