The Nyungwe Forest in southwestern Rwanda is one of Africa’s oldest and most pristine montane rainforests. Geographically, it stretches across a rugged mountainous terrain that serves as a vital watershed between the Nile and Congo river basins. Covering over 1,000 square kilometers, the forest is home to an extraordinary array of biodiversity, including 13 primate species such as chimpanzees and the Ruwenzori colobus monkey. The vegetation is characterized by giant mahogany trees, ferns, and over 200 species of orchids that thrive in the mist-shrouded high altitudes. Historically, Nyungwe survived the last Ice Age, serving as a refugium for numerous endemic species, which accounts for its profound ecological significance. Today, Nyungwe National Park is a flagship for sustainable tourism in Rwanda, famous for its spectacular canopy walkway suspended 70 meters above the forest floor. Preserving this ecosystem is essential for Rwanda’s water security, as the forest captures and regulates approximately 70 percent of the country's surface water.
