Historical site
Kibeho is a small town in southern Rwanda that gained worldwide fame when the Virgin Mary reportedly appeared to three young schoolgirls in the 1980s. The apparitions, which began in 1981, included messages of prayer, repentance, and a terrifying vision of extreme violence, rivers of blood, and countless bodies, a prophecy many interpret as a foretelling of the 1994 genocide. After years of investigation, the Vatican officially recognized the Kibeho apparitions in 2001, making it the only Vatican-approved Marian apparition site in Africa. Today, Kibeho is a major pilgrimage site, drawing thousands of pilgrims from around the world, especially on the anniversary of the first apparition on November 28. The 'Church of Our Lady of Sorrows' was built on the site.

Visiting
The Kibeho Sanctuary in Rwanda is a significant Marian apparition site, open to pilgrims and visitors. You can visit the church, the apparition site, and the visitor center.
Typical hours
The sanctuary is typically open daily from morning until evening. During major pilgrimage festivals, access may be restricted. It is advisable to check hours in advance.
Photography
Photography is allowed throughout the grounds, but not during Mass out of respect for worshippers. Avoid flash inside the church.
Time needed
Allow about one to two hours for a tour of the sanctuary and its surroundings. For pilgrimages, the stay may be longer.
Combine with
Combine the visit with a hike on the nearby hills or a trip to the city of Butare. Nyungwe Forest is also not far away.
Getting there
Kibeho is about 30 kilometers south of Butare, reachable by car or bus. From Kigali, the drive takes around three to four hours.
Insider tip
Visit the sanctuary on a weekday to avoid crowds. Bring water and a sun hat, as it can get very hot around midday.
