Gicumbi, formerly known as Byumba, is the capital of the district of the same name in the Northern Province of Rwanda. The city is located at an altitude of about 2,250 meters, making it one of the highest cities in the country and giving it a cool climate. The landscape is characterized by countless steep hills that are intensively used for agriculture, especially for the cultivation of tea, wheat, and Irish potatoes. Gicumbi is an important border crossing to Uganda at Gatuna, which makes the city a strategic point for trade on the Northern Corridor. The region played an important role in the country's history, especially during the liberation struggle of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) in the early 1990s. Today, the city is a growing commercial center for the surrounding agricultural region.
