Lake Kivu (Rwanda)

Weather…

Lake Kivu is one of the African Great Lakes, situated within the Albertine Rift on the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Covering an area of approximately 2,700 square kilometers and reaching a maximum depth of 480 meters, it ranks among the world's deepest freshwater bodies. Geologically, Lake Kivu is unique for its meromictic stratification, where deep waters do not mix with surface layers. The lower depths contain vast reservoirs of dissolved methane and carbon dioxide, which Rwanda extracts for large-scale power generation via the KivuWatt project. The lake is surrounded by steep mountains and fertile volcanic soils, supporting extensive coffee and tea plantations. Uniquely for the region, the lake is free from crocodiles, hippopotamuses, and bilharzia parasites, making it exceptionally safe for swimming and water sports. Idjwi Island, located within the lake, is one of the largest inland islands in Africa. Historically a vital trade route, the lake remains a cornerstone of economic development and tourism in western Rwanda.
