Wrangel Island (Russia)

Weather…

The remote Wrangel Island, situated in the harsh Arctic Ocean between the Chukchi and East Siberian Seas, serves as an unparalleled evolutionary refuge. Because the island remained remarkably free of extensive glaciation during the last Ice Age, it has preserved a unique, ancient flora that closely resembles the prehistoric mammoth steppe. The island is most renowned, however, as the Arctic's primary 'maternity ward': each winter, hundreds of pregnant polar bears excavate their denning snow caves here, resulting in the highest density of polar bear dens anywhere in the world. Furthermore, the island provides a crucial breeding ground for massive herds of Pacific walruses and hosts the only known nesting colony of snow geese in Asia. Paleontologists hold Wrangel Island in exceptionally high regard, as an isolated population of woolly mammoths managed to survive here until roughly 4,000 years ago, outliving their mainland counterparts by millennia.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The brief Arctic summer, usually spanning July and August, is typically the only practical time to visit when retreating sea ice allows ships to approach safely. This extremely short window gives the best chance to see polar bears, walruses, and migratory bird colonies.
🌅
Best time of day
Thanks to the extreme northern latitude, the summer months experience near-continuous daylight, allowing for potential wildlife observation at almost any hour. Despite the midnight sun, many species still maintain rhythmic activity patterns, often foraging during the morning hours.
📜
Etiquette
Guests must strictly follow all instructions from armed expedition guides and are never permitted to explore independently due to the high density of polar bears. Maintaining an extremely safe and respectful distance from all wildlife is a strict legal requirement in this nature reserve.
🎒
What to bring
Heavy-duty, expedition-grade waterproof and windproof clothing, along with insulated rubber boots for wet Zodiac landings, are absolutely mandatory. Because visitors must keep far away from polar bears for safety, packing a high-powered pair of binoculars or a long telephoto lens is vital.
🧭
Getting there
Reaching this highly isolated Arctic island is exclusively possible via specialized, ice-strengthened expedition vessels operating during the brief summer season. These rare voyages demand extensive advance planning, significant financial investment, and specialized governmental permits.
🦌
What to expect
Arctic travel is inherently unpredictable, with itineraries frequently altered by sudden fog, severe storms, or shifting sea ice conditions. Extensive patience is required while spending long hours actively scanning the vast, freezing horizons from the deck of the expedition ship.
