Wrangel Island Reserve (Russia)

Weather…

Situated high in the Arctic Ocean, the Wrangel Island Nature Reserve is one of the most remote and pristine arctic wildernesses on the planet. This harsh and icy landscape is globally recognized as the primary nursery for polar bears, boasting the highest density of maternity dens in the world. Every winter, hundreds of female polar bears seek refuge here to birth their cubs safely. Additionally, the island serves as a critical sanctuary for the Pacific's largest colony of walruses, as well as musk oxen and numerous rare arctic bird species. Paleontologically, Wrangel Island holds immense significance as it was the very last stronghold of the woolly mammoth, where a small population survived until roughly 4,000 years ago, long after mainland mammoths had gone extinct. Because of its unparalleled ecological diversity and deep historical value, the reserve has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
