The Putorana Nature Reserve is located in the heart of the Putorana Plateau in North-Central Siberia, representing a vast, pristine wilderness of subarctic and arctic ecosystems. This immense basalt plateau was formed approximately 250 million years ago by the Siberian Traps, a massive volcanic eruption that covered millions of square kilometers in molten rock, resulting in the stepped, staircase-like topography visible today. Known as the land of ten thousand lakes and a thousand waterfalls, the reserve contains the highest concentration of waterfalls in Russia, including some of the tallest in the Arctic circle. The deep, fjord-like lakes, such as Lake Vivi and Lake Lama, contain massive reservoirs of fresh water and are surrounded by dramatic cliffs that rise hundreds of meters above the water level. The reserve serves as a critical sanctuary for the Putorana bighorn sheep, a unique subspecies found nowhere else on Earth, and it marks the primary migration route for the world's largest wild reindeer herd, consisting of over 400,000 individuals. Its extreme isolation, hundreds of kilometers from the nearest road, has preserved a unique transition zone between northern taiga, forest-tundra, and polar desert. In recognition of its geological uniqueness and biological importance, UNESCO designated the Putorana Plateau as a World Heritage Site in 2010.

Summer (July-August) is the only practical travel season for the Putorana Plateau, when reindeer herds migrate and waterfalls roar. In winter temperatures are extreme and the area nearly inaccessible.

Best time of day
During the midnight sun in July it is light 24 hours - use early morning or late evening hours for best wildlife viewing. Reindeer are most active during cooler times of day.

Etiquette
The reserve is strictly protected - entry is only with a special permit and accompanied by a licensed guide. Keep distance from reindeer herds and do not disturb animals during migration.

What to bring
High-quality weatherproof gear is essential as weather can change quickly - even in summer warm layers and rainwear are needed. Binoculars are important for viewing reindeer herds from afar.

Getting there
Access to the Putorana Plateau is typically by helicopter from Norilsk or nearby Talnakh. Due to remoteness, multi-day expeditions with camping gear are required.
