Great Arctic State Nature Reserve (Russia)

Weather…

The Great Arctic State Nature Reserve, sprawling across the Taimyr Peninsula and adjacent islands in the Arctic Ocean, is the largest nature reserve in Russia and all of Eurasia. Covering an unfathomable area of over 41,000 square kilometers, it is roughly the size of Switzerland. This freezing, utterly isolated wilderness consists primarily of polar cold deserts and extreme arctic tundra. Permafrost dictates the landscape, and temperatures barely inch above freezing even during the fleeting summer months. The reserve stands as one of the very last major strongholds for the polar bear and supports significant breeding colonies of walruses and beluga whales along its icy, treacherous coastlines. Inland, musk oxen, immense herds of wild reindeer, and Arctic wolves roam the treeless tundra. Despite the severe and punishing climatic conditions, millions of migratory birds, including various rare geese and gull species, flock here to breed during the summer. Protecting this enormous expanse is absolutely critical for global climate change research.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The short summer (July-August) is the only time when the Great Arctic State Nature Reserve is accessible. Then you can observe polar bears, walruses, and Arctic birds in their natural habitat while the tundra is in full bloom.
🌅
Best time of day
During the polar summer, the sun shines 24 hours so you can observe wildlife at any time of day. However, predators like Arctic foxes and polar bears are often more active during the cooler hours between midnight and early morning.
📜
Etiquette
Keep a minimum distance of 500 meters from polar bears and never approach walrus colonies on land or water. Walking on the fragile tundra is only allowed on marked trails, and all waste must be taken with you.
🎒
What to bring
Full Arctic gear with a down jacket, windproof pants, and waterproof boots is essential. A powerful binocular (10×50) and a camera with telephoto lens help you spot animals across the vast tundra.
🧭
Getting there
The reserve is reachable only by helicopter or special vessel from Dudinka or Khatanga, often as part of an organized expedition. The trip is extremely complicated and expensive, and participant numbers are strictly limited.
🦌
What to expect
Arctic wildlife observation requires great patience - even in great conditions you may wait days for a polar bear sighting. Use the time to explore the unique tundra flora and enjoy the silence of the Arctic.
