Franz Josef Land (Russia)

Weather…

Franz Josef Land, an extremely remote and desolate archipelago situated deep within the Arctic Ocean, stands as the northernmost and coldest territory of Russia, its existence having been only rumored for centuries. The roughly 200 islands comprising the group are approximately 85 percent covered by a permanent, massive ice cap; in the few places where bare rock emerges during the fleeting Arctic summer, only sparse lichens and mosses manage to cling to life. Despite the incredibly hostile environmental conditions, which feature weeks-long polar nights and freezing blizzards, the surrounding waters absolutely teem with life. The rugged coastlines and shifting ice floes provide an essential habitat for massive herds of walruses, while polar bears roam and hunt undisturbed across the pack ice. Historically, the archipelago served as a critical, though highly treacherous, staging ground for numerous polar expeditions racing to the North Pole. Today, it forms a strictly protected component of the vast 'Russian Arctic' National Park.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The Arctic summer (July-August) is the only time when Franz Josef Land is accessible and wildlife is active. Polar bears, walruses, and seabirds are found in greater numbers along the ice-free coasts.
🌅
Best time of day
During the polar day, the sun is up 24 hours, so you can observe animals at any time. However, most marine mammals are more active in the early morning and late evening hours when light is softer.
📜
Etiquette
Keep a large safety distance from polar bears - at least 300 meters - and never approach walrus colonies on land. Landing on the islands is only allowed with special permits to protect the fragile Arctic environment.
🎒
What to bring
Extremely warm layered clothing is vital, as is a wind- and waterproof outer layer. A good binocular with high light-gathering ability and a camera with telephoto lens are indispensable for wildlife observation.
🧭
Getting there
Franz Josef Land is reached almost exclusively by special icebreaker cruise ships departing from Murmansk. The trip is very expensive and requires long advance booking as well as adherence to strict safety and environmental regulations.
🦌
What to expect
Wildlife observation in this extremely remote region heavily depends on ice conditions - sometimes polar bears are not seen for days. Embrace this uncertainty as part of the Arctic adventure and enjoy the sweeping landscape.
