Anadyr is the administrative center of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug and holds the distinction of being the easternmost city in Russia. Located at the mouth of the Anadyr River on the shores of the Bering Sea, it was originally established in 1889 as the frontier outpost of Novo-Mariinsk. The city is geographically isolated, accessible primarily by air or by sea during the brief ice-free summer months. In the early 2000s, under the governorship of Roman Abramovich, Anadyr underwent a significant aesthetic transformation, with gray Soviet-era apartment blocks repainted in bustling colors to offset the harsh Arctic landscape. Today, the local economy revolves around fishing, regional administration, and mining, particularly gold extraction in the surrounding tundra. Despite its remote location, the city is home to modern infrastructure, an impressive museum of local lore focused on Chukchi heritage, and the Holy Trinity Cathedral, which is reportedly the world's largest wooden Orthodox church built on permafrost. Anadyr remains a vital hub for Arctic shipping and a center for preserving the unique indigenous cultures of northeastern Russia.
