Cozia Monastery (Romania)

Weather…

Cozia Monastery is one of Romania's most valuable medieval architectural and artistic monuments, founded by Prince Mircea the Elder between 1386 and 1388. Located on the banks of the Olt River in Vâlcea County, the monastery is a prime example of early Wallachian architecture with strong Byzantine influences. The church facade is adorned with intricate stone carvings, glazed ceramic rosettes, and decorative reliefs, reflecting a harmonious blend of Christian symbolism and artistic craftsmanship. Its interior houses precious 14th-century frescoes, which are among the best-preserved murals of that era in Wallachia. Mircea the Elder chose Cozia as his final resting place, and his tomb remains a significant historical site today. Throughout the centuries, the monastery served as a vital cultural hub, hosting a school of calligraphy and maintaining an extensive library. The complex was later enhanced by Prince Constantin Brâncoveanu, who added a magnificent porch in the Brâncovenesc style in the 18th century.
