Romanian National Opera Timișoara (Romania)

Weather…

The Romanian National Opera in Timișoara is a landmark building in Victory Square, constructed between 1871 and 1875 according to the designs of the famous Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer. Originally built in the Renaissance style, the structure suffered two devastating fires in 1880 and 1920, leading to significant reconstructions that resulted in its current monumental Neo-Byzantine facade designed by Duiliu Marcu. Established officially as a national institution in 1947, the building is unique in Europe for housing four distinct cultural institutions under one roof. The opera house holds immense political significance as the site where, in December 1989, Timișoara was declared the first free city in Romania from its iconic balcony during the Revolution. Today, the main auditorium accommodates approximately 600 spectators and remains a bustling hub for high-quality opera, operetta, and ballet performances in the Banat region.
