Călușari Dance (Romania)

Weather…

The Călușari dance is one of Romania's most spectacular and complex ritual dances, recognized by UNESCO in 2005 as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Traditionally performed around Pentecost (Rusalii) by groups of men who swear a vow of secrecy and brotherhood, the dance is led by a master known as the 'vătaf'. Dancers wear white costumes adorned with bells on their ankles and colorful ribbons, performing acrobatic leaps and rapid footwork while wielding wooden sticks. The ritualistic purpose of the dance is to heal the sick and protect the community from the 'Iele', malicious mythological creatures believed to strike people with illness during this period. The choreography is characterized by extreme speed and synchronization, often accompanied by lively violin and lute music. Today, Călușari remains both a spirited rural ritual in southern Romania and a celebrated stage performance at international folklore festivals worldwide.
